Ever heard these phrases in church and didn't know what they mean? You're not the only one. Maybe these explanations will help.
“Washed by the Blood” / “Saved by the Blood of the Lamb” - being cleansed of sin through Christ’s sacrifice of his own blood. No actual touching of blood is involved. Jesus is often referred to as a Lamb because spotless, blemish-free lambs (perfect like Jesus) were commonly used for sacrifice.
"Lay hands on” - a symbolic act used for imparting blessings, healing, commissioning leaders, or receiving the Holy Spirit. It acts as a way to make spiritual, invisible realities visible and public.
"Anointing with oil" - a physical act expressing a spiritual truth: we belong to God and have committed ourselves wholly into his care. Prayer expresses this point with words; anointing with oil expresses that point in action.
“Hedge of Protection” - God’s ivisible, spiritual, wall or circle of protection around us our families or possessions.
"Traveling Grace" - a way to ask for God’s protection, peace, and guidance while on a journey.
"Quiet/Alone Time" - A personal time set aside for prayer, Bible study, and reflection on God.
"Give your life to Jesus" - surrendering control of your life to Jesus
“Refiner’s Fire" - metaphor representing the transformative trials, hardships, and discipline God uses to cleanse believers of their moral imperfections. Just as extreme heat melts precious metals to separate dross from pure gold, this process removes flaws to draw individuals into deeper maturity.
"On fire for God" - metaphor describing an intense, passionate, and active devotion to one's faith.
"Don't let anyone/anything steal your fire" - not letting anyone or anything take away or suppress your devotion and passion for God.
“Planting churches” - starting a new local church or congregation of believers.
"Salt of the earth" - Salt flavors, can cause thirst and can preserve. Believers are called to flavor the world and create a thirst for Jesus while preserving the gospel of Jesus by passing it on to others.
“Right hand of fellowship” -
“Call to ministry/preach" - the feeling a person experiences when they sense they’re being called by God to a specific position or ministry, usually in an official capacity within a church. This could mean anything from holding the title of pastor to bible study teacher.
"Accepting Christ" - Receiving Jesus as Lord and Saviour, acknowledging His sacrifice for sin.
"Born Again" - Experiencing spiritual rebirth through faith in Jesus Christ.
"Denying Self" - Choosing to put aside personal desires to follow Jesus’ teachings.
"Family of God" - The collective group of believers who are spiritually adopted as God’s children.
"Filled with the Holy Spirit" - Being empowered and guided by the Holy Spirit who dwells within for Christian living and service.
"Freedom in Christ" - The liberation from sin and legalism through faith in Jesus.
"Fruit of the Spirit" - The qualities produced in a believer’s life by the Holy Spirit, such as love, joy, and peace.
"Gifts of the Spirit" - Supernatural abilities given by the Holy Spirit to believers for growing the Church.
"Lord's Supper" - A Christian practice commemorating Jesus’ last meal with His disciples, involving bread and wine.
"New Creation" - The transformed state of a person who has accepted Christ, living a renewed life.
"New Self/Nature" - The spiritual nature given to believers, enabling them to live according to God’s will.
"Old Self/Nature" - The sinful nature inherent in humans before accepting Christ.
"Second Coming" - The future return of Jesus Christ to earth to judge the living and the dead.
"Sinful Nature" - The inherent tendency of humans to sin, inherited from Adam and Eve.
